GSDC Mpls & St. Paul Upcoming Events

The German Shepherd Dog Club of Minneapolis and Saint Paul is committed to promoting the German Shepherd Dog and the future of the breed. The club does so in a variety of ways, beginning with socialization classes for young puppies, and training to all levels of obedience, rally, herding, conformation showing and therapy and service work.

As a regional club we support the German Shepherd Dog Club of America, and encourage exhibiting and participating in events at AKC recognized shows and matches given by other dog clubs.

We encourage and hold programs that educate and support the German shepherd dog owner, as well as start newcomers into the sport of dog show exhibiting, and performance trials. In addition, we promote the German Shepherd Dog through promotions, such as benching at the Minnesota State Fair, and holding our own specialty shows and matches.

As a large club, we have tremendous experience and resources for the German shepherd enthusiast to draw upon. Lastly, we are committed to the German Shepherd Dog for what he was created to be; a loyal companion and friend.

The German Shepherd Dog Club of Mpls & St. Paul meets on the second (2nd) Friday of every month at Animal Inn Training Center unless otherwise posted.    Map & Directions

Agility Trials - July 21-23rd, 2017

Our next Agility Trial we be held at Soccer Blast in Burnsville, MN. Please stop by, or enter if you run a GSD in agility, to check it out. It is truly a fantastic event to see wonderful handlers and their athletic dogs compete. We will be having a huge raffle again this year. As always, volunteers and prize donations are always welcome.

What is Agility? Agility is a dog sport in which a handler directs a dog through an obstacle course in a race for both time and accuracy. Dogs run off-leash with no food or toys as incentives, and the handler can touch neither dog nor obstacles. Consequently the handler's controls are limited to voice, movement, and various body signals, requiring exceptional training of the animal and coordination of the handler.

In its simplest form, an agility course consists of a set of standard obstacles laid out by a judge in a design of his or her own choosing in an area of a specified size. The surface may be of grass, dirt, rubber, or special matting. Depending on the type of competition, the obstacles may be marked with numbers indicating the order in which they must be completed.Courses are complicated enough that a dog could not complete them correctly without human direction. In competition, the handler must assess the course, decide on handling strategies, and direct the dog through the course, with precision and speed equally important. Many strategies exist to compensate for the inherent difference in human and dog speeds and the strengths and weaknesses of the various dogs and handlers.

Match, Temperament Test & Trick Dog
- August 5, 2017

Come, bring a dish to share. Meet some old friends, make some new ones.

A sanctioned match is an informal event at which neither Championship points nor credit toward an Agility, Rally, Obedience, or Tracking title are awarded. They are events at which dog clubs, judges, stewards, and exhibitors and their dogs gain experience needed for licensed events.

All of the Rules Applying to Dog Shows, and the Agility, Tracking, and Obedience/Rally Regulations also apply to sanctioned matches.

Our next Match we be held at the Animal Inn in Lake Elmo. Please stop by, or enter if you have a GSD in Conformation, Obedience, or Rally Obedience. This is a good opportunity to check out a new event and have fun without the pressure of a real dog show. It is truly a fantastic event to see the wonderful handlers and our dogs compete.

Even if you have never been to a dog show or event, this is a great way to see what all the buzz is about. The atmosphere is relaxed and the people are friendly and willing to answer questions.
